Nearly seventy (70) NPP Members of Parliament have, this morning, Wednesday, June 19, 2025, called on former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at his office in Accra to declare their support for him.

Dr. Bawumia, who has declared his intention to contest the NPP flag bearer again, received a major boost during the visit, following the pledging of allegiance and declaration of support from the party’s MPs.

The NPP, on Tuesday, June 17, announced it will organise an early election to select its 2028 flag bearer, and the election is slated for January 31, 2026, ahead of the party’s election for executive positions across board.

The declaration of support from more than two-thirds of the party’s MPs just days after the announcement is a major statement to the former Vice President, who led the party to the 2024 elections.

Dr. Bawumia still enjoys considerable support from the grassroot members of the party, and among the party stalwarts, with many calling for him to be retained as the party’s flag bearer, in line with their tradition of giving presidential candidates more opportunities after failing to win in their first attempt.

Advocates for the retention of Dr. Bawumia as flag bearer, have referenced the enduring stories of former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor, who was nominated twice in succession by the party before winning, as well as immediate past President, William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was also backed three times by the NPP at presidential primaries, before eventually winning on his third attempt.

Dr. Bawunia warmly welcomed the MPs, and expressed gratitude to them for the visit and their support.
