The Gomoa East and Awutu Senya West District Assemblies are sharing one truck with the Awutu Senya East municipality, all in the Central region, to convey their refuse to one landing site.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Awutu Senya West, Nyamekye Kalala Eghan, made this revelation in an interview with Onua News.

The DCE said in order to make the district a tourism hub, there should be an improvement in the sanitation in the area.

“We have Fort de Goede Hoop or Fort Good Hope built by Dutch Gold Coast, which was established in 1667 near Senya Bereku. We have big forests in Bontrase, Obrachire, among others that we can create the next Kakum for people to come and tour for us to get revenue.

“Yes, we have to make the district a tourism hub and one of the key things we have to do is to improve sanitation so I held a meeting with the Assembly members and other stakeholders and decided to have a clean-up exercise in the District every month,” he said.

Mr. Eghan said the Assembly is also planning to improve on the number of refuse collector and cleaners because those that are working currently are not enough.

“We want to buy enough refuse containers for people to dump refuse in so if we buy more of the containers, it will encourage residents to dump refuse in”, he explained.

The DCE said “when I came, I have realized that Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West and Awutu Senya East (Kasoa), have just one refuse truck and one dumping site at Senya Bonsuoku.”

“This is leading to the continues pilled up of refuse in the District and other places so we have decided to the have a refuse dump. So, I engaged chiefs in the communities to release lands for dumping sites and Bawjiase has given us 15 acres of land such purposes.

Agriculture

Mr. Eghan said the district want to take farming to the next level and as such the assembly want to own it own land for farming.

“We have distributed fertilizers to farmers. All the five secondary schools in the district have been directed to own a land for farming so that they can use the produce to feed the schools. We have nursed cocoa seedlings for farmers. As we speak, we are on the field collecting data for the President’s ‘nkoko nketsenketse’ initiative to motivate and support every household to have backyard garden.”

Education

The DCE said the assembly has already distributed six hundred dual-desks to various schools and in the next few weeks, another one thousand dual desks will be distributed to the basic schools while another five hundred mono desks will be distributed to the second-cycled schools.

“During the BECE, we shared four thousand, one hundred and twenty-five mathematical sets to the candidates,” he added.

Mr. Eghan said there are two uncompleted teachers’ bungalows in the District and they would want to complete them and hand them over to the schools.

“Ona is located at Kofi Ansah and the other is at Bereku and because there are no accommodations in these two places, teachers do not want to stay for long period to teach,” he said.

Roads

He said bad road is a major challenge in the District but with the DRIP machines in place, they are waiting for the rains to settle before they continue re-shaping the roads in the District.

“The Senya road has been awarded so the contractor will begin work. Ofaakor to Bawjiase has also been awarded and the contractor is working seriously. We will urge the drivers to be cautious when driving on the road,” he added.

Job creation

Mr. Eghan added that the assembly want to create about one thousand jobs in the year 2025 so the assembly has started talking to private individuals who have factories in the district to offer employment to the youth.

“We have a company that process pineapple, mango and coconut in Akuse so we are in talks with them and in the month of July, they will take in about two hundred people. We have a company that manufactures polytank so we are talking to them to give us about five hundred employments for the youth,” he stated.

Security

The DCE said a special task force has been set up by the assembly to patrol the district on regular basis to ensure the citizens are safe.
