The Ghana Meteorological Agency is urging the public to prepare for intermittent showers and a dip in temperatures, with current conditions hovering around 26 degrees Celsius.

Officials say while the rainy season is easing in the southern regions, the north remains at the peak of its downpour, with heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds expected.

Director of the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Joe Tetteh Porturphy, explains that the cooler weather is being influenced by binocular air currents and high pressure over Ghana, which is driving moisture inland.

“Along the coast, we’re seeing temperatures at 27 degrees; other areas are registering 24. In Accra, it’s between 25 and 26. From now through August, we expect mostly drizzle and light showers. The northern regions will continue experiencing intense rain, with the minor season stretching to October, before the harmattan sets in.”

He also issued a warning regarding rising water levels in the northern sector, suggesting that Burkina Faso may open its dam, a move that could trigger downstream flooding and damage farmlands in Ghana.

“This is the period we should be cautious looking at the rivers and how they are flowing.so that if there is anything, that Burkina Faso might open its dam then we should be preparing for a lot of water coming and then see how best we can help our farmers and those in the northern sector.”

Porturphy emphasized the health risks associated with the current weather, especially for children and the elderly, and urged families to dress warmly and take extra precautions.

“This period also brings a lot of health hazards. People get cold, you have to cover yourself very well. The little children and the elderly need to wear protective clothing. This is the period we have to look at our dressing and when you are sleeping, make sure you cover yourself.”

The Meteorological Agency is calling for continued public vigilance, especially in farming communities and low-lying areas, as Ghana transitions through this seasonal shift.
