Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned the attacks at some polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency during the rerun in 19 polling stations.

Dr. Bawumia says the practice defies what democracy stands for and indicates the police officers’ inability to protect those assaulted leaves much to be desired.

According to him, all the attacks at the various polling stations were targeted at their party members, a situation he thinks is unfortunate.

Addressing the media following the happenings, the 2024 flag bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)  said it’s regrettable Ghana’s democracy seems to decline after every election instead of seeing progress.

“What has gone on at Ablekuma North this morning is very disturbing. This is not the democracy that we want to see in Ghana. Our supporters are being attacked by thugs in the presence of the police who have been unable to protect them,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He averred that “the [NPP] candidate, Akua Afriyie has been attacked, Hawa Koomson has been attacked, our Deputy National Organiser has been attacked.”

“After every election, we want to see that democracy is being enhanced. This is very important for the peace and stability of our country,” he added.
