The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has commended Onua Group for promoting grassroots football through the newly-launched Onua-GC Brand Community League.
He said the initiative is in line with the resolve by the Mahama-led government to promote grassroots sports in Ghana.
“President Mahama has indicated that grassroots sports must be strengthened and improved,” the Buem Member of Parliament (MP) stated on Saturday, July 12, when the competition was launched.
“This does not mean government alone will do it, so what Onua FM and Onua TV have come together to do with GC Brand and possibly other sponsors behoves on me as the Minister responsible for Sports and Recreation to back it with my all.
“So, that is why I am here and I endorse this Community League that will involve four zones of eight teams in a zone, bringing a total of about 32 teams in a league is one of the biggest.
“And I pray that you will get even more sponsors so that in future it will be a very big league system in the country.”

The launch was followed immediately by the Zone 1 gala, which involved eight teams namely Ashaiman Revelations, Ashaiman Future Stars, Tema TOR 11 and Tema Comm. 7.
The others are Tema Comm. 2, Dawhenya, Tema Comm. 13 and Sakumono Estates.
At the end of the day, Ashaiman Revelations and Tema Comm. 2 qualified from the zone to the grand finale, scheduled for mid-August.
The gala moves to Zone 2 on Saturday, July 19 at the Adjiringanor Wembley.
Among communities to slug it out for the two tickets are Adjiringanor, Adenta, Madina, Lakeside, Dodowa and Nsawam.
