As the world marked Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day on July 16, 2025, Onua Foundation joins the global community in recognizing the profound and growing impact of AI on societies, economies, and human potential.

While the day began in 2021 as a promotional initiative linked to the German film “Eve,” it has since evolved into a broader opportunity to reflect on how AI is shaping our collective future.

In a statement to commemorate the day, Mr. Abu Issa Monnie, CSR Executive 2025, and Head of the Onua Foundation, emphasized the critical importance of AI for Ghana and the West African sub-region:

“Artificial Intelligence offers new opportunities to transform the economic trajectory of Ghana and Africa at large. From precision agriculture to smart healthcare systems, supply chain optimization to financial inclusion, AI is no longer a luxury for advanced nations — it is an essential tool for leapfrogging developmental barriers in Africa.”

He noted that recent advancements in generative models, ethical AI frameworks, and human-machine collaboration present an opportunity for Africa to build inclusive, resilient, and innovation-driven economies.

“As we reflect on the promise of AI, we must also ensure that its deployment is ethical, inclusive, and contextually relevant to African societies. The time to invest in AI education, infrastructure, and indigenous innovation is now,” Mr. Monnie added.

While some critics have questioned the origins of AI Appreciation Day, Onua Foundation as part of its Empowerment under SHE Projects (Sanitation,Health and Empowerment), sees it as an opportunity to elevate awareness and action across both the public and private sectors. The foundation is committed to advocating for responsible AI adoption that addresses real-life challenges across health, education, climate, and commerce in Ghanaian communities.
