The Zuarungu Senior High School in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region has been closed down following violent clashes between rival student groups on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
The Upper East Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) Donatus Akamugri Atanga, ordered the immediate closure of the school to prevent a deterioration of the situation.
The violent clash, reportedly sparked by the alleged theft of a mobile phone, escalated into a large-scale brawl that resulted in significant destruction of school property, including the burning of some school structures.
Security sources have confirmed to OnuaOnline that four students have been arrested in connection with the unrest, one of the suspects managing to escape custody while being transported to the police station.
According to security sources, the escapee allegedly absconded with a magazine during the escape, prompting a search for him.
In response to the chaos and rising tensions, a joint police and military task force has been deployed to the school. The team has been tasked with overseeing the evacuation of students, especially those from conflict-prone areas such as Bawku.
Authorities say the escorted transfers are a precautionary measure to prevent potential reprisal attacks.
The REGSEC has urged calm and cooperation from all stakeholders as efforts to restore normalcy continue.
