Deputy Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Alexander Twum-Barimah has said the Commission is intensifying its fight against the proliferation of illicit drugs in the country.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, July 27, 2025, he noted that the recent raids and confiscation of illicit drugs in some parts of the country is due to the Commission’s unrelentless efforts.

According to him, the Commission’s hard work has resulted in these recent drug busts, noting that it has decided to take the fight against illicit drugs to the doorstep of Ghanaians.

“NACOC is working hard. But now we are taking the fight to their doorstep and about a week or so when we destroyed some quantities of drugs, the Director-General made it clear that from July we are going to extremely intensify the fight,” he stated.

Mr. Twum-Barimah said hitherto to President Mahama’s administration some departments of the Commission which were unproductive in their work have all been “extremely activated” to contribute to the fight against drugs in the country.

“Now all the various units or departments that were more or less sleeping have been extremely activated. As at the time we took over, I will say yes (some departments were sleeping),” he remarked.

While he fell short to name these departments he claimed were not active, he stressed that government has now commenced with full force a renewed fight to curb the proliferation of illicit drugs in the country.

“I mean if you are not actively working as you are supposed to, it means you are sleeping on the job, it is as simple as that. I don’t need to outline them (the sleeping departments)

“Now, you can attest to the fact that they have all been awaken and are actively working,” he added.

The Commission has in the past months intercepted containers containing substances suspected to be illicit drugs.

It has also arrested persons in possession of illicit drugs and engaged in is trade through a number of operations aimed at curbing illicit drug trade in the country.
