Management of the Ghana Education Service says plans are far advanced to ensure emergency safety measures for schools under violent threats.
This follows recent reports of violent incidents at Bawku Senior High School, Zuarungu SHS, and Nalerigu SHS all in the Upper East and North East regions.
A press statement dated July 29, 2025, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi says, “GES is currently in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, Regional and District Directors and the leadership of the affected schools to take urgent steps to ensure that the SHS 3 students can sit for the upcoming WASSCE under safe and fair conditions. Special examination arrangements and secure centres are currently under consideration. ”
GES assured that continuing students of safeguarding their security.
“For SHS 1 and 2 students in the affected schools, GES is exploring all viable learning avenues to ensure continuity of lessons while campuses remain closed for safety assessment” it reads.
The Ghana Education Service however calls for an end to the aged conflict.
“We call on all stakeholders, community leaders, parents and law enforcement agencies to support efforts to maintain peace, discipline and sanctity of our educational institutions,” Mr Fenyi wrote.
Two students in the Nalerigu SHS and a student in the Bawku SHS have recently been killed leading to the closure of the latter.
Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily closed by the Municipal Education Directorate after a tragic shooting incident on campus.
