The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has directed the Metro Directorate of Education to transfer the headteacher and some teachers of the Buokrom Estate M/A Basic School over an alleged extortion.

The school authorities are alleged to have demanded payment of GHC30 from each pupil.

In an interview on Akoma FM with John Marfo on August 4, the Mayor confirmed having given the directive hours before an official statement was issued.

A video which has already gone viral on social media, originated from an account with handle ‘@governor1tv’ sought to draw the attention of the President of the Republic to intervene in an alleged mandatory collection of items and amounts levied pupils of the Buokrom Estate M/A Basic School by their head teacher.

In his reaction Mr Ofori-Agyeman Boadi said “President Mahama has not authorized any head to levy pupils. Payment of capitation grant has been effected with no outstanding payment. So, teachers have received money to run public schools. I watched the video and I was distressed.

He revealed that, “We have investigated and can confirm the content of the video. The head teacher of the school and teachers levied each pupil GHC30. It is also true that a pupil who could not pay was not allowed to write an exams.

All the teachers involved have been directed to appear before a GES disciplinary committee on August 15. Even as they go through the disciplinary process, I have directed that all teachers of Buokrom M/A Basic School are transferred.”
