The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the unlawful possession of weapons and ammunition after its officers intercepted a vehicle containing a cache of firearms and ammunition.

The interception occurred on Sunday, August 17, 2025, when a patrol team from the Kuntanase District Police intercepted the abandoned vehicle.

According to a press release from the Ashanti Region Police Public Affairs Unit, the incident unfolded while officers were conducting routine patrols on the Apotuoagya-Bekwai road.

The patrol team spotted a white Toyota Sienna with registration number NR 289-24 suspiciously parked near a bushy area along the roadside.

Two men were observed standing next to the vehicle, with one allegedly smoking a narcotic substance.

Upon noticing the approaching police team, the two individuals immediately fled into a nearby bush, and despite a pursuit by the officers, they managed to escape.

A subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle led to the discovery of a significant haul of weapons and items believed to have been prepared for a criminal operation.

The retrieved items include:

  • One (1) AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. 29546)
  • One (1) locally manufactured firearm
  • Two (2) AK-47 magazines, each loaded with 30 rounds
  • Four (4) packets of AK-47 ammunition, each containing 25 rounds
  • Seven (7) loose rounds of ammunition
  • One pair of Wellington boots
  • One Huawei smartphone
  • Cowrie shells
  • One pair of sandals
  • A Ghana Card and Temporary Driver’s License (the name on which has been withheld for investigative purposes)

The police command has commenced investigations to track down the individuals involved and to ascertain the purpose of the weapons.
