The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has reiterated that the police will not condone any acts of violence during the Akwatia by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Drawing from experiences of previous by-elections and election reruns marred by violence, the IGP has emphasised that the police are well-prepared to prevent any form of violence that may arise during the poll.

He has therefore warned individuals planning to cause trouble in Akwatia to reconsider their decision, as the police will not tolerate any disruptions during the by-election.

Speaking to recruits at the Police Training School in Kyerematen, Eastern Region, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Mr. Yohuno assured Ghanaians that the police service is fully prepared to maintain law and order.

“We want to assure Ghanaians that the police is ready to handle any type of thing that may come in Akwatia. We are ready with the men. We have the men who can handle this situation and then our eyes are red for Akwatia and nobody, nobody should think of coming to cause trouble,” he cautioned.

The Police chief further issued a warning to political parties not to mobilise vigilantes in an attempt to interfere with the electoral process.

“No political party should mobilise men to come and foment trouble, and nobody should have in mind the intention of snatching a ballot box. We have prepared our men adequately to handle this situation, and that, I informed the political parties as I met them yesterday [Tuesday],” he explained.

Persons who fall foul to the law regarding the polls, the IGP noted, will be quickly arrested and detained as they will make available prison trucks to facilitate that exercise.

“What I told them is that we are going in with Black Marias. Black Maria is the prison on wheels. We have a truck that is well prepared to keep people who cause trouble. We keep them in, and then finally, we discharge them at the police cells,” he revealed.
