Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has said security agencies have drawn important lessons from the disturbances that characterised the Ablekuma North by-election and are taking steps to prevent a recurrence.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the Minister indicated that the Ghana Police Service has reviewed its operational approach to election security, a move he said contributed to the relatively peaceful conduct of the subsequent by-election in Akwatia.

The revised measures will serve as the blueprint for policing future elections across the country.

“Mr. Speaker the lessons learnt from the Ablekuma North experience were given due attention and effectively integrated into subsequent security election operations.

“This strategic adjustment translated into a successful, peaceful and incident-free conduct of the Akwatia by-election,” he stated.

The Minister added that the peaceful conduct of the Akwatia by-election drew commendation from the Electoral Commissioner, political parties and election observers.

“The Ghana Police Service received commendation from the Electoral Commission, the political parties, election observers and the general public for its professionalism, proactive intelligence gathering, timely deployment and impartial enforcement during the Akwatia polls,” he remarked.

Muntaka stressed that performance of the Ghana Police Service at Akwatia stands as clear evidence of institutional learning, improved operational coordination and enhanced public confidence in the capability of the Ghana Police Service to provide effective election security across the country.

He further disclosed that the Police will strengthen coordination with the military and other security agencies to enhance election security operations and ensure a more effective response to potential threats.
