The controversial death of a 31-year-old patient at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) on April 13, 2025, allegedly caused by medical negligence sparked public outrage.
An unannounced visit by the Health Minister led to a confrontation with the workers leading to an indefinite strike by TTH doctors due who felt disrespected.
Coincidentally, the then CEO of the hospital was relieved of his post.
The incident led to the formation of an independent investigative committee while the Ministry made efforts to supply the facility with some equipment to support better working conditions.
After months of investigation, the 3 member committee chaired by Dr. Abdula Raheem Mohammed presented its report. Other members are; Halid Abdul-Rauf and Dr Takyi Duayeden.
‘‘In response to the public concerns regarding the death, the minister for health initiated an independent investigation into the matter to access the clinical operations so in doing so we had about 12 sittings in two months. We met the patient’s relatives and friends, staff of TTH who were within the unit, and other staff who mattered in the issues.
“And of course we also observed the standard operations procedures and we came out with our findings. And in addition to the findings, we also came up with far reaching recommendations which will improve upon the overall efficiency of health care delivery at the facility,” the chairman explained.

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh after receiving the report said he would study the content and recommendations for action.
‘‘This issue became an issue of public concern. Once a committee has sat on it and a report has been presented to the ministry, I can assure you that we will take the time to study the report and the recommendations that have been made, we will make sure that they are implemented to improve upon service delivery at the facility,” he said.
Systemic challenges, including non-functioning equipment, water and power issues, and a lack of essential medical supplies were among the issues that came up as challenges confronting healthcare delivery at the facility at the time.
