The vetting committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared twelve aspirants seeking to contest the Tamale Central parliamentary seat.

The twelve will undergo a primary on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, the Northern regional capital.

Chaired by the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, the team completed its screening exercise on Sunday, August 31, clearing all 12 aspirants to contest the primary.

Madam Asamoah, in a statement issued on Sunday, after the vetting, applauded the presence of three women among the twelve, describing the development as refreshing. She also highlighted the high calibre of candidates in the contest, including diplomats, lawyers, professors and doctors.

The party has admonished the aspirants to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid personal attacks that will disparage their counterparts and impugn the integrity of the party.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Minister, John Ali Adolf, also stressed the need for unity among the aspirants and their supporters, urging them to refrain from violence during the campaign.

  12. Abdul Hannan Gundado

The Tamale Central constituency is set for a by-election to elect a new MP following the demise of their representation in Parliament, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

He was among eight persons who died in a military helicopter crash on a national assignment on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom area, near Obuasi in the Ashanti region.

Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced to abstain from the by-election in honour of the late former MP.
