President John Dramani Mahama has secured a firm commitment from contractors on the beleaguered Ofankor–Nsawam road project to complete all works by the second quarter of 2026, following a high-level visit to the site on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

The President, who was accompanied by the Minister of Roads, Governs Kwame Agbodza directly confronted the project’s chequered history, demanding not only a swift acceleration of works but also cast-iron guarantees that quality standards would be strictly adhered to, ensuring the dual carriageway stands the test of time.

President Mahama noted that government has committed to provide enough resources for road contractors to complete various projects under the Big Push programme.

“What we have done is, we have moved this contract unto the Big Push programme and enough provision has been made for the Big push project. This year, we have about 40 million cedis and next year we will have about 30 million cedis. So, I think there will be sufficient resources to keep contractors going.

“As government commits to pay you well, you should also commit to move faster on the road and also use quality materials,” the President told the contractor on site.

The contractor, Maripoma Enterprise assured the President and the Minister that the Ofankor-Nsawam road project will be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

The President further acknowledge the contractor’s deadline and noted that the he will be held to his word.

“We will hold you to your word. You say by end of second quarter next year, it should be finished, okay,” he said.

On his part the Roads Minister noted that he would ensure the contractor fulfills his promise to complete the project by second quarter of 2026.

“We don’t owe the contractor any amount. I want to hold the contractor to his word that by the end of the second quarter of 2026, the project will be completed,” he said.

President Mahama arrived at Amasaman to inspect the construction work on the Amasaman-Nsawam road.

The President paid a working visit to the Ofankor Nsawam road project to ascertain the progress of work on the 33.4-kilometre road project.

The project which started under the previous NPP administration has come under scrutiny recently over portions that has caused discomfort to residents and passengers.

The contractor, Maripoma Enterprise stopped works on the site over lack of payment on submitted certificates.

Government blamed the progress on the debt restructuring the country is undergoing but gave firm assurance of meeting the construction timeline.

Work stalled for about eight months following non-payment to the contractor, a situation which sparked agitation by drivers, commuters and residents over the deplorable condition of the stretch.

Maripoma Enterprise Limited, the contractor, however, returned to site after receiving payment of $77 million from government about two weeks ago.
