NDC Parliamentary candidate for Tamale Central by-election, Prof. Alidu Seidu has explained his decision to venture into politics and contest the seat.
In a yet-to-be aired interview on TV3’s Hot issues, Prof. Seidu noted that following the death of former MP, Murtala Mohammed, he was approached by certain individuals who wanted him to contest the seat.
He explained that according to these persons who met him, his name was key amongst prospective persons to contest the seat after several consultations.
The Associate Professor and the Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana noted that after pondering over the suggestion, he agreed to contest the seat, stating that he has no regret in making such a decision.
“Yes, people met me and sold that idea to me that when this happened, they have done a lot of consultations and my name kept coming up so they had to speak to me.
“So, I said give me some time to think over it which I did. And I thought I had made the best decision and I still don’t regret it,” he stated.
Prof. Seidu who was recently appointed the Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission said he believes his decision to go into politics will provide an opportunity to serve Ghana and his constituents.
“I believe this is the beginning of more things to come in my quest to serve my constituency, my people and then the state at large and Ghana as a country,” he added.
Prof. Alidu Seidu emerged victorious in the Tamale Central parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on September 6, 2025.
He secured 840 votes out of 1,511 valid ballots cast, beating 11 other contenders in what was a hotly contested race.
His closest challenger, former Tamale Metropolitan Assembly Mayor Abdul Hanan Gundadoo, polled 536 votes, while the remaining candidates shared the rest of the ballots.
After being declared the winner, he expressed gratitude to the party, the delegates, and his fellow contenders for what he described as a clean and competitive campaign.
