The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed the closure of the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region, following an attack on the station by some youth from the community.
The IGP has also ordered that all officers at the station be withdrawn. In a statement issued on Sunday, September 22, 2025, signed by Eastern Regional Staff Officer, Supt. George Peprah Mills, for the Public Affairs Unit, it states that the irate youth attacked the station after a youth who was arrested died in custody.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that on 21st September, 2025 at about 0700 hours,
some youth in Kukurantumi attacked the Kukurantumi Police station and the barracks
with stones, clubs and other implements and attempted to set the building on fire
following the death of a suspect, Bright Kena @ D-ball who had been arrested for a
case of unlawful entry and stealing and was on admission at the Community Hospital,
Kukurantumi,” the statement noted in some parts.
The statement added that the police authority has since engaged the family of the deceased and other community leaders, promising a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.
“Meanwhile, the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations
Department have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the
death of the suspect.”
While video footage of the attack is being reviewed for identification and arrest of the perpetrators, the police have also advised that due process be used in addressing issues rather than resorting to violence.
