The Accra Technical University (ATU) is set to make history as it prepares to host the Ghana Universities Debate Championship (GUDC) 2025 for the very first time.

The tournament, which will run from Monday, October 6 to Saturday, October 11, 2025, promises to bring together the brightest debaters from universities across Ghana in what is expected to be a thrilling celebration of intellect, strategy, and the art of persuasive communication.

The GUDC has long been regarded as Ghana’s premier inter-university debating competition, serving as a platform for students to engage with pressing national and global issues, develop critical thinking, and hone their public speaking skills.

This year’s edition is particularly significant as it marks ATU’s debut as host, positioning the University as a hub for intellectual exchange and youth development.

ATU’s Commitment to Excellence

Speaking on the historic hosting rights, Dr. Martin Owusu Amoamah, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), expressed his excitement and confidence in ATU’s ability to deliver an unforgettable championship.

“This is a proud moment for Accra Technical University. Hosting the Ghana Universities Debate Championship for the first time not only demonstrates our commitment to academic and extracurricular excellence, but it also provides us the platform to showcase ATU as a center for innovation, leadership, and intellectual development.”

“We are ready to deliver a world-class tournament that reflects the best of Ghanaian talent and hospitality,” Dr. Amoamah said.

Building a Culture of Debate

The Championship is also being championed by Mr. Michael Appiah Asamoah Koranteng, Convener of GUDC 2025 and coach of the ATU Debate Society, who highlighted the broader vision behind the event.

“Debate is more than competition; it is about preparing young people to think critically, speak boldly, and engage meaningfully with the challenges of our world.”

“By hosting GUDC 2025, we are not only giving a platform to students but also strengthening a culture of debate that shapes leaders for Ghana, Africa, and the world,” Mr. Koranteng noted.

According to him, “this year’s edition will be one of the most inclusive, engaging, and impactful championships yet.”

A National Celebration of Ideas

The week-long championship will feature rigorous rounds of British Parliamentary-style debating, training workshops, adjudicator development sessions, and networking opportunities for students, educators and stakeholders.

Beyond the competition, GUDC 2025 will serve as a melting pot of ideas, fostering collaboration and understanding among Ghana’s diverse university communities.

The Local Organising Committee has assured participants, partners, and the public of a well-coordinated, impactful, and memorable event, signaling a new chapter in the growth of debate and intellectual engagement in Ghana.

As October approaches, anticipation continues to build, with ATU set to welcome hundreds of participants, volunteers, and supporters from across the country.

For many, GUDC 2025 will not only be a tournament but also a celebration of Ghana’s youth, their voices, and their future.
