The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the Bafana Bafana of South Africa by docking 3 points and 3 goals from their tally in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The decision, taken on Sunday, September 28, follows the side’s fielding of an ineligible player in one of the qualifiers.
The Bafana Bafana, who top Group C, are said to have featured Teboho Mokoena in their 2-0 home win over Lesotho on Friday, March 21.
This is said to have breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) and Article 14 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations.
“Consequently, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has declared the atch in question to have been forfeited by the representativeteam of South Africa by a score of 3-0.
“SAFA has also been ordered to pay a fine of CH10,000 to FIFA while Teboho Mokoena has been issued with a warning.”
The parties have been given 10 days within which to request a “motivated decision”.
“The forfeiture decision remains subject to a potential appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.”
The decision, if stayed, will see the 1996 African champions still maintain top spot but on the same points with second-placed Benin.
They will, however, play Zimbabwe and Rwanda in their remaining qualifiers. The match against the Warriors, despite, away eill be played in Durban.
