A former Minister of Energy in the previous Akufo-Addo administration, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has declared his intentions to contest for the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He says he arrived at the decision after making consultations with the people that matter in his life, including persons in the party who advised him to take that challenge.

In a statement issued Tuesday, September 30, 2025, he said he sees it as a “bounden duty” to take up that position to serve the NPP.

“I have had consultations with members of my family and those who are very close to me, and whose lives would be most affected by the decisions I make.

“I have also listened carefully to what the broad masses of our party people, and indeed many outside our party, are asking of me.

“Having factored in all the considerations, I see it as my bounden duty to respond to this call to duty, and hereby announce that I will contest for the position of NATIONAL CHAIRMAN of my party upon the opening of nominations,” the statement contained.

Meanwhile, Boakye Agyarko is calling on the leadership of the party to strip itself off the Danquah-Busia-Dombo label which he says is not a reflection of what prevails in the party, and go back for the UP tradition through which the NPP was formed.
