A New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and former Minister of Energy under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has urged the party leadership to rid themselves of what he describes as the false “Danquah-Busia-Dombo” label.
According to him, although the party bears that label, it doesn’t reflect their ideals in reality. He believes the deeds of members are enough to show that the said false label has no place in the party.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Mr. Agyarko called on the leadership to return to the party’s UP tradition and embrace the ideology that guided its transformation into the NPP.
“Day in and day out, our collective actions provide ample reasons why we must rid ourselves of this false ‘Danquah-Busia-Dombo’ label, with all its cascading false claims and consequences, and return to our original label of the UP tradition,” Boakye Agyarko stated.
He explained that “this falsely imposed label in itself is a harbinger of unnecessary strife among us,” expressing optimism that a return to the UP tradition will help them get rid of the false and counter-claims that have characterised the party.
“With such a return to our original label (UP tradition), these false claims and counter-claims will be delegitimized and disappear. Our tradition is and must be the UP tradition, nothing more, nothing less.”
He explained that the party’s original tradition does not place others as superior to be worshiped, but rather guides them to give honour to whom it is due.
“The UP tradition is not about hero-worshiping individuals or deifying our leaders, but rather holding dear and remaining true to our values and principles. We pay our respects to those who reflect and exemplify our values,” he explained.
He urged the leadership to make this consideration since members of the party need “peace of mind and unity” to remain a formidable force in the political spectrum.
His comments come at a time when the NPP is battling internal struggles after its 2024 election defeat. The party’s upcoming presidential primary has resulted in a trade of words amongst aspirants, with some people alleging that the leadership chose a certain date for the exercise to favour a particular candidate.
