Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has formally filed his nomination to contest the National Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mr. Agyarko filed his forms on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the party’s National Headquarters in Accra.
His forms were purchased and presented by over 50 Constituency Chairpersons, which he described as an “instruction from the grassroots” to lead the restoration of the party.
Addressing over 600 delegates and about 2,000 party faithful from all 16 regions after filing his nomination, Mr. Agyarko gave a candid assessment of the NPP’s current state.
He noted the sharp decline in parliamentary strength from 169 seats in 2016, to 137 in 2020, and 88 currently, alongside a loss of over 2 million presidential votes between 2020 and 2024, based on Electoral Commission figures; a situation he said shows the party is in retreat and in need of urgent rebuilding.
The former Vice President at the Bank of New York and former Campaign Manager said he is seeking the chairmanship as a job, not a career, having no higher political ambition. “A Chairman who wants nothing further for himself can afford to be fair to everybody,” he said.
He pledged total loyalty to the flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, while remaining neutral in all other internal contests.
Mr. Agyarko outlined a five-pillar vision, including building a credible membership register within one year, providing annual audited accounts, reconciling wounded members, ensuring operational excellence and promoting members’ welfare.
He said his ultimate goal is “Operation One Touch”, which is securing victory for Dr. Bawumia as President and restoring a decisive NPP Majority in Parliament. “We are stopping the retreat today. We begin the rebuilding. The Elephant must serve again,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Political Scientist Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has tipped Mr. Agyarko to win the race.
Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, Dr. Asah-Asante said Mr. Agyarko stands taller than his contenders; Paul Afoko, John Boadu and Sammy Crabbe in experience and discipline.”He has what it takes to lead the party, and he will be a better Chairman,” he said.
