Former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has said his bid for the National Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is an instruction from the grassroots.
He said this on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after formally filing his nomination at the party’s National Headquarters in Accra.
Agyarko’s nomination forms, according to a statement issued from his outfit on Wednesday, were purchased and presented by over 50 constituency chairpersons from across the country.
He described the gesture as more than an endorsement, but a clear instruction to lead the total restoration of the party. “I see this not as a mere endorsement, but as an instruction from the grassroots to lead a total restoration,” he said.
Addressing over 600 delegates and about 2,000 party faithful from all 16 regions, Agyarko said the party needs strategic rebuilding and accountability.
According to him, the sharp decline in parliamentary strength from 169 seats in 2016, to 137 in 2020, and 88 currently, alongside a loss of over 2 million presidential votes between 2020 and 2024, based on Electoral Commission figures shows the party is in retreat and in need of urgent rebuilding.
Agyarko, who is a founding member of the party and former Chairman of the Danquah-Busia Club of North America, said he seeks the chairmanship as a job, not a career, and has no higher political ambitions.
“A Chairman who wants nothing further for himself can afford to be fair to everybody,” he added.
He pledged total loyalty to the flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, while remaining neutral in all other internal contests. The NPP will elect its National Chairman at its National Delegates Conference on October 3, 2026.
