The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ghana has issued a firm demand for the immediate arrest and prosecution of an Assistant Senior High School teacher whose conduct, recently captured in a widely circulated video, constitutes a grave violation of professional ethics and safeguarding responsibilities.

In a strongly worded statement, FIDA Ghana condemned the teacher’s behavior, describing it as “a betrayal of the duty of care entrusted to all educators.” The organization stressed that teachers hold positions of trust and influence and are expected to protect, not endanger, the students under their supervision. According to FIDA, “the conduct in question is not only unacceptable but warrants permanent disqualification from working in any educational institution, whether public or private.”

FIDA Ghana welcomed the swift response from the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, who has pledged to engage the Ghana Police Service to ensure the offender is brought to justice. Commending this proactive stance, FIDA further “called on the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to act without delay to arrest and prosecute the teacher involved.

The organization stressed that any failure to act decisively would erode public confidence and put more students at risk across the country.

The statement also urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure a transparent and thorough investigation. FIDA Ghana emphasized that the pursuit of justice must be relentless and uncompromising, and that accountability is critical to preserving the integrity of Ghana’s education system.

Referencing the Ghana Education Service’s Safe Schools Initiative, launched in 2018 to combat violence and foster protective environments in schools, FIDA Ghana noted that “this incident highlights the urgent need for full implementation and enforcement of existing safeguarding measures.

The organization reiterated that every child has the right to feel safe in school and that institutions must adopt a zero-tolerance stance on abuse to maintain safe, nurturing environments for learning.

“Schools must remain sanctuaries of education and empowerment, not arenas of fear and exploitation,” the statement read. FIDA Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the GES and other stakeholders to strengthen safeguarding policies, enforce standards rigorously, and empower communities to demand accountability and justice when those standards are breached.
