One person has been detained in Wassa Amenfi East in the Western Region for failing to comply with a directive from the Assembly, despite an otherwise successful cleanup exercise.
Municipal Chief Executive Raymond Nana Ebbah has reiterated that he will ensure the Assembly’s decision is respected by all stakeholders.
Amid the national observance of the National Sanitation Day, security services and residents of the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality in the Western Region joined forces for a successful cleanup exercise.

Despite prior announcements, one shop owner defied the directive by choosing that time to offload his goods from a cargo truck, leading to an agitation with security personnel.
Explaining himself to the security officers the shop owner who is a cousin to the Municipal Chief Executive said; “After opening the shop, I discovered its National Sanitation Day and decided to close. A cargo truck with my goods arrived, so I asked them to offload it, as they couldn’t wait for the event to end.”

But According to some residents, this is not the first time he has exhibited such behavior; they believe he is deliberately trying to provoke the municipal authorities.
“He is lying, and this is the second time he has done this. During the first program relaunch, he behaved the same way. When confronted, he insulted everyone, including the MCE. The problem is compounded by the fact that he is a direct relative of the MCE.
If he is allowed to disregard the rules, what incentive do others have to comply? We have all closed our shops to participate. What is the value of these few hours if he refuses to close his, undermining the effort for everyone?” They quizzed.

To prevent the situation from escalating, the Municipal Chief Executive ordered his arrest.
Speaking in an interview, Raymond Nana Ebbah expressed his gratitude for the residents’ support and urged them to make environmental cleanliness a routine priority, rather than waiting for a formal announcement from the assembly.

This initiative will not be a one-time event. Moving forward, we will make this a routine exercise without waiting for directives from Accra.
As an Assembly, we are committed to improving our sanitation standards to avert any potential sickness or disease in our community.” He said.
