Gloria Owusu, the Member of Parliament for Trobu in the Greater Accra region, has dismissed the assertion that the NPP lost the 2024 elections because of their candidate.
Declaring her support for the 2024 flag bearer of the party, she said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will suffer a heavy defeat in the 2028 elections, if they present any candidate, other than the former Vice President.
Speaking during Dr Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region on Friday, October 3, 2025, the lawmaker said the 2024 election defeat was due to the party’s loss of touch with the grassroots, and had nothing to do with their candidate.
“I believe strongly that our 2024 election loss was not caused by the candidate. Our attitude to our own supporters caused our defeat,” she stated.
She recounted an encounter at the Dome Market, where she said market women passionately expressed their preference for Dr Bawumia and urged party leaders not to make the wrong decision in choosing a flagbearer.
“I was at the Dome Market the other time to buy something and when the market women recognised me, a number of them came around and mobbed me. What I am saying, God is my witness. They cautioned me that if we, the NPP, make any mistake and don’t bring Dr Bawumia, we will see what will happen in 2028. They said they don’t want anyone who will come and be insulting people,” she recounted.
She added that Dr. Bawumia continues to enjoy overwhelming backing from both party stakeholders and grassroots supporters across the region.
“For us in Amasaman, Trobu, Anyaa Sowutuom and Dome Kwabenya, all that we are saying is we assure you of our unflinching support and we will work very hard to get you elected as our flagbearer,” she said.
Her endorsement adds to recent support Dr Bawumia has received from some MPs as he intensifies his campaign to secure the NPP’s presidential nomination for the 2028 elections.
