Leader and Founder of United Party, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has said the current nature of Ghana’s political system requires a third force, insisting that the duopoly between the NDC and the NPP must end.
In an exclusive interview on TV3’s New Day, Friday, October 17, 2025, he explained that Ghanaians are fed up with the performances of the two main political parties (NPP and NDC), stressing that Ghana’s current political system has been filled with “divisiveness” and “rancour” amongst party members, a situation he said has presented an opportunity for Ghanaians to chose a third party.
“The reason why I presume the context and the dynamics now is different is that if you look at the nature and character of our politics now with the duopoly between the NDC and the NPP, our politics have become so divisive and so rancorous that if there was ever a time in this country where there was clear need for a third party that would bridge the political divide, that time is now.
“Right now it is very clear. It is not just the rancour and the divisiveness, but it is also the performance of the two parties so it is so clear that now people are looking for another opportunity,” he stated.
The newly formed United Party by Alan Kyerematen is not the first of such a situation to happen in Ghana’s political terrain. In the past, political party members who were disgruntled left their party to form a breakaway faction but could not succeed.
Responding to the question about how sure he is about the success of his new party – United Party, the former Trade and Industry Minister under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration explained that the context and dynamics of Ghana’s politics back then is not the same currently.
“One needs to appreciate and understand the dynamics of those parties and the period within which they have come alive. Sometimes it is a bit sensitive to be speaking about specific examples.
“Generally speaking, if you look at the people who have led those parties that have come out of either NDC or NPP, yes they would probably have been stalwarts in the party…So those who left much earlier and tried on their own maybe the context was different at that time because maybe there was probably no strong need for a third force,” he added.
Alan Kyerematen officially launched the United Party (UP) on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
At a ceremony held at the Coconut Groove Hotel in Accra on Thursday, October 16, Alan Kyerematen described the formation of the United Party as the dawn of a new era and a people’s movement to unite the nation beyond partisan divides.
“Today, we lift Ghana UP, united in purpose, driven by integrity, and committed to prosperity for all,” he declared to loud applause from supporters.
“This is not just the birth of a party but the beginning of a movement that puts Ghana first,” Alan stressed.
