Leader and Founder of United Party (UP), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has rejected the amnesty granted by the New Patriotic Party to all of its former members who had left the party.
The NPP in August 2025 granted amnesty to all its members who were suspended as well as those whose disciplinary cases are pending.
This is contained in a press release dated August 16, 2025 and signed by the Acting National Chairman, Mr Danquah Smith Buttey.
“I write to inform you that the National Council at its Emergency Meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025, resolved in the interest of unity and reconciliation to grant a General Amnesty to all Party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate adjudicatory bodies,”Mr Buttey announced.
However, Alan Kyerematen, a former member of the NPP and now leader and founder of new party, United Party has described the NPP’s action as “presumptuous.”
In an interview on TV3’s New Day, October 17, 2025, he explained that the amnesty does not apply to him as he willingly resigned from the party.
“That was one of the most presumptuous statement that was made. That they had granted amnesty, well, they granted amnesty, they defined those who could benefit from the amnesty.
“A party cannot talk about granting me amnesty. I didn’t even understand what they meant by amnesty. If it is political amnesty as we know it and that’s what they are talking about then it didn’t apply to me,” Alan stated.
Alan emphasised that “It has no value for them to say that they are granting amnesty. At any rate, they even said those who left on their own are not part of the amnesty. But it had no application to somebody like me and even shows the arrogance.”
He added: “I have been a founding member of the NPP. I have been a distinguished senior member of NPP, I left on my own accord and even at the risk of sounding a bit boastful, I can tell you that I am one of the most popular politicians within the rank and file of the NPP.”
Our politics have become divisive, now is the time for a third force – Alan Kyerematen
