Heart of Lions have gone top of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League following a 3-0 thrashing of bottom-placed Basake Holy Stars on Friday.
The early kick-off of Matchday 7 at the Kpando Sports Stadium lived up to billing as Coach Bashir Hayford had warned of revenge following last season’s encounter at Basake Holy Stars. A goalless draw had taken a jolt on the title dreams of the Volta Region side.
Coach Augustine Adotey’s side were also chasing their first win and first goal of the campaign.
Therefore, right from the blast of referee Alex Amoabeng’s whistle hostilities heightened.
Both teams came close to breaking the deadlock with the visitors containing the attack of Lions.
However, an attempt at goal by midfielder Michael Ephson in the 38th minute hit the goalpost only to fall in front of Kodwo Obeng Jnr, who gets his second consecutive goal for his club.
Ephson himself scored before the break to make it 2-0.
With the match heading to a 2-0 scoreline, Anthony Owusu scored three minutes from time to make it 3-0 for Heart of Lions.
The win sends Lions above Medeama SC on the log with 14 points.
Their next match will be away to Swedru All Blacks.
Basake Holy Stars will return home to await Asante Kotoko – in an outstanding match – and Hearts of Oak on Matchday 7.
