The Sunyani Technical University is struggling to recover and protect some 35 acres of land which forms part of a 163-acre land belonging to the Institution. The 35 acres of land is being encroached on by some individuals working with land guards.
The Vice-Chancellor, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, told the Public Accounts Committee on Thursday, November 6, 2025 that the University received a request of compensation from a woman who claimed to relate to a family that originally owned the land.
He said the demand was then forwarded to the Minister for Education and Finance at the time in 2014. After that demand, he said people started building on the 35-acre land under strong protection of land guards who sometimes threaten officials and students of the university.
Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah said the university mobilised and demolished the structures being put on the land. He revealed that the University is now facing 11 different cases at the Sunyani High Court over the 35 acres of land.
“So, we responded and forwarded the letter to Education and Finance Minister an inform the woman that we have sent their request to the Minister. Then just about two weeks later, we saw court summons and we made our solicitors respond and we went to court.
“So, as the case was pending in court, we realized that people had started building on part of the land. The land is divided by VRA electricity pylons so behind the pylons, we have 35 acres so they have started there and their claim was that now the pylon is the demarcation.
“When they started, the university mobilized we went in and demolished over 30 structures on the land. They took us again to court and we have about 11 cases pending before the Sunyani High Court,” he stated.
He lamented that all attempts to reclaim that parcel of land have not been successful, calling on government to intervene.
He noted that the current Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area has invited all parties involved, hoping for an amicable resolution of the matter.
“The current Paramount Chief of Sunyani Traditional Area has actually summoned all the parties involved to come for an amicable resolution so that is what we are waiting for and we believe that Nana will be able to handle this for us so that the University land will be free from encroachment,” he remarked.
