Transport operators and traders in Bawku have appealed to the government and state security agencies to urgently implement measures to boost security, as business activities along the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom corridor have been pushed to the brink due to persistent insecurity that continues to disrupt travel, commerce, and livelihoods.
Addressing the media at a press conference, the operators and traders, led by Seidu Abubakar, the Bawku Municipal GPRTU Secretary, said the conflict that resurged in 2021 has expanded beyond its roots and evolved into a wider public-safety and economic crisis.
Armed groups, they noted, have set up roadblocks, diverted commuters, and in some cases attacked vehicles attempting to access Bawku.
The persistent dangers, the group said, have forced many businesses to shut down entirely.
“Armed groups have mounted illegal roadblocks, diverted travellers, and, in some cases, attacked vehicles attempting to access the township. These dangerous activities along the highway have forced many businesses to shut down,” the statement said.
The operators and traders are therefore urging the swift deployment of adequate security personnel along the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom corridor to stabilise the international transport route, which serves Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Togo.
They also proposed increased patrols and checkpoints at known hotspots on the corridor, as well as stronger coordination among regional and border security agencies to curb vehicle diversion, smuggling, and unauthorized cross-border movement by armed groups.
While assuring their commitment to helping restore normalcy and revive trading, the operators and traders noted that stability on the corridor is crucial not only for Bawku but for regional commerce across West Africa.
“Our commitment to restoring normalcy, safety, and economic activity in Bawku remains unwavering,” they said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces has strengthened its positions in the Bawku and Binduri areas to deal with violent situations, especially as the Otumfuo’s mediation of the chieftaincy conflict nears conclusion.
The additional detachments are to support existing ground forces, particularly in Binduri, where there has been new wave of attacks.
The Northern General Officer Commanding of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Worlanyo Agbebo, who visited the area recently, said the military’s actions are aimed at safeguarding lives and restoring stability.
