The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has assured that the rival chief in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, has been taken out of Bawku by security agencies.

This is in line with the recommendation made by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as contained in the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report.

“This afternoon, personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre from Bawku, pursuant to the recommendations of the Otumfuo Asantehene Osei Tutu II mediation report regarding the Bawku affair. Alhaji Seidu Abagre is safe in the care of the security agencies,” the Interior Minister stated in a press release dated December 24.

On December 16, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II presented the Bawku conflict mediation report to President John Dramani Mahama for consideration and further action.

The Asantehene recommended among others that government should guarantee the safe passage of the rival chief, Alhaji Seidu Abagre out of the town.
Presenting the report, the Asantehene said a committee will be set up to begin the reconciliation process.

“Mr. President, I want to suggest that I was going to meet them again, we set up a mediation process and everything. The way things have happened, we include the Peace Council and everything, we nominate some lawyers from each side, form a committee and we start the reconciliation process,” Asantehene noted.

The President gave the assurance after the recommendations will be given due consideration.

“I am pleased about Otumfuo report and I can assure him that government would look at this report and within the next 24 hours government will issue a statement on its definitive position on the report,” the President noted.

A statement was subsequently issued by the President’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, accepting all the recommendations.
