The Ministry of Education has responded to media reports suggesting that some newly admitted first-year students at Labone Senior High School in Accra are attending classes while seated on the floor, with others relying on dining-hall benches as temporary desks.
In statements to the press, officials say the Ministry has taken “urgent and immediate steps” to address the situation.
According to the Ministry, Labone Senior High School formally requested 3,282 mono desks through the Ghana Education Service (GES) and plans are underway to provide it for the school.
“We want to assure parents, the general public and all stakeholders that the matter is being handled with the utmost urgency,” a Ministry spokesperson, Daniel Fenyi said.
He explained that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has approved and allocated all the desks requested. Delivery is expected to be fully completed by Monday, 24 November 2025.
“This is part of our broader effort to close furniture gaps in senior high schools across the country,” Mr. Fenyi added.
The Ministry explained further that the intervention aligns with an ongoing nationwide programme to procure 200,000 mono desks for 100 double-track schools identified as priority institutions in their transition to the single-track system.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to quality education, the Ministry emphasised that ensuring every student has access to a “safe, supportive, and conducive learning environment” remains a key priority.
Officials noted that the Ministry will continue to collaborate closely with GES, GETFund and other partners to deliver essential infrastructure for effective teaching and learning nationwide.
