The Interior Ministry has ordered a full-scale probe into alleged assassination attempts on Special Prosecutor William Kissi Agyebeng while carrying out his official duties.
The order follows a claim by OSP’s Director of Research, Communications and Strategy, Sammy Darko, on Newsfile on Saturday, December 6, 2025, that Kissi Agyebeng survived two assassination attempts.
The OSP’s constitutionality and functions have sparked debate for weeks, with some calling for the office to be scrapped entirely, while others want the Special Prosecutor replaced.
In a statement posted by the Interior Ministry on Facebook Monday, December 8, 2025, it said Sammy Darko had further alleged on the same show that he had also been handcuffed and assaulted by 17 police officers.
“The Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Mr Samuel Appiah Darko, mentioned the assassination attempt on Newsfile, [On JoyNews] a television station in Accra, on December 6, 2025. He also claimed on the same programme that he had been handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel,” the statement read.
According to the Ministry, the claims are concerning and poses serious threat to the nation’s attempt to combat graft in the country, if they appear to be true after investigations are carried out.
“Beyond the security implications of these claims, such dangers to personnel of accountability institutions, if true, can undermine the government’s efforts to combat corruption, which have intensified since it took office,” it stated.
According to the Ministry, preliminary engagement with Mr Agyebeng indicates that the alleged assassination attempts occurred before 2025.
Officials have, however, indicated that there is no record of any such threats filed at any police station or state security agency.
The Minister of Interior, Mohammed Muntaka-Mubarak, responding to the development noted in the statement that a comprehensive probe will be launched into the allegations irrespective of the time it occurred, since “crime does not expire.”
He also directed that an investigation be made into Appiah-Darko’s claim that he was handcuffed and physically assaulted by 17 police officers.
“The Minister of Interior has further directed as follows: Since crime does not expire, the Ministry has ordered a full-scale investigation into the claim of assassination attempts. The Ministry has also ordered an investigation into the claim by Mr. Samuel Appiah Darko that he was handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel,” the statement read.
The statement further mentioned that the lives of every Ghanaian is paramount, reiterating the Ministry’s commitment to protecting everyone to carry out their duties.
“The Ministry of Interior reiterates its commitment to protecting all lives and properties to ensure that all Ghanaians can conduct all their lawful affairs without any fear for their safety,” the statement concluded.
