The Eastern Regional Branch of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is demanding that the Inspector General of Police prosecutes both present and past students of Kade Senior High Technical School found culpable in the alleged assault incident within 14 days.
According to the Association, no concrete action has been taken three months after the incident occurred.
At a press conference in Koforidua, the Association warned that failure to meet the deadline will trigger a nationwide sit-down strike in the 2026 academic year among other demands.
“We are therefore calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to immediately arrest and prosecute all students identified in the Kade SHTS video. Justice must be swift and uncompromising not only to serve as a deterrent but also to restore confidence among teachers nationwide,” they demanded.
NAGRAT warned that “If prompt action is not taken by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Education Service to prosecute the culprits (students) and a fair compensation given to the victim involved within fourteen (14) working days, teachers across the country may be forced to embark on a nationwide sit-down strike, a situation that will inevitably disrupt the 2026 academic calendar.
“The patience of teachers has reached its limit, and we will no longer tolerate a system that allows our members to be beaten, insulted, and humiliated without consequence,” he added.
The Regional NAGRAT Chairman also demanded that risk allowance be instituted and implemented from next year.
“NAGRAT is demanding that a risk allowance be instituted immediately for all teachers, recognizing the increasing dangers associated with their duties. The safety and dignity of teachers are non-negotiable. It is both a moral and legal obligation of the state, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the Ministry of Education must guarantee the protection of every teacher in the line of duty. No teacher should face physical harm, verbal abuse, or psychological trauma simply for performing their professional responsibilities,” he noted.
Already investigations have begun into the matter.
“The National Secretariat of NAGRAT and The Director General of Ghana Education Service have constituted independent committees to investigate and report same for necessary actions to be taken against the perpetrators.
Preliminary investigations conducted by our union reveal that, the assaulted teacher was simply ensuring discipline and upholding school rules when he became the target of a gang of unruly students, ” Chairman Awoonor- Yevu Godwin explained.
Over the weekend a viral video showed about six students attacking a teacher in the community in what is believed to be retaliation for disciplinary measures taken against them earlier. They were barred from the examination for malpractice in October during the WASSCE.
“Let it be clear, this incident is not isolated. It is part of a disturbing trend that has spread across our schools. In September 2025, a second-year student of Takoradi Technical Institute, identified as Emmanuel Sam, stabbed a teacher after the teacher attempted to stop him from entering the school through an unauthorized path.
Earlier in 2025, during the WASSCE examination, a student of Christian Methodist Senior High School stabbed a teacher Walter Yesutor Adanunyo for preventing him from engaging in examination malpractice. In 2024, a teacher named Ishmael Famous of Asuoso SHS in the Offinso District of the Ashanti Region was brutally attacked and stabbed in the eye by a student after instructing students to return to class and study,” he recalled.
“In 2021, a final-year student of Three Town SHS in Denu stabbed a teacher who had intervened to stop him from manhandling a first-year student. That same year, in another disturbing incident, students at the Nungua Cluster of Schools led an attack on their teacher, Moses Onyameasem. These attacks are becoming alarmingly frequent.” Chairman Awoonor Yevu Godwin stated.
The Greater Accra NAGRAT Regional Secretary Richard Kwashie Kovey cautioned that the Association may be forced to withdraw its members from invigilating, because already the allowances are meagre.
“We will be compelled to urge our members not to take part in any external examination conducted by WAEC, in the first place the amount of money paid by WAEC to teachers who take part in the invigilation to suffer this brutalities is less than GHC200.Teachers have been taken for granted”
