The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be held once every four years after a 2028 edition, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.

Dr Patrice Motsepe said this is part of the reforms in football on the continent.

The South African football administrator announced on Saturday, December 20, ahead of the start of the 2025 AFCON, that a new tournament, African Nations League, will be introduced from 2029.

The League will be played annually and it will be similar to the current UEFA Nations League, Dr Motsepe explained.

“We have the most exciting new structure for African football,” he said.

“I do what is in the interests of Africa. The global calendar has to be significantly more synchronised and harmonised.”

The AFCON has been held biennially since it’s inception in 1957.

It was, then, switched to even years and then back to odd years to help African countries prepare for the quadrennial FIFA World Cup.
