Over 400 Metro Mass buses have broken down and under repairs leaving just 115 buses to operate across the country.
Mohammed Mubarak Watara, Head of Communications at the Metro Mass Transit Head Office in Accra disclosed this to TV3’s Armstrong Gold Alorgbey when the news team paid a visit to the office on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Mr. Watara further disclosed that the Managing Director of the company has directed that at least 5 or 10 buses are repaired each day to augment Metro Mass’ transport operations in the country.
“Currently, our fleet of buses are 115 running daily for us then we have over 300 getting 400 buses broken down at our various terminals.
“But due to the new schedule by the current managing director, he wants to make sure that everyday we have not less than 10 buses which will be repaired to join the 115 buses being operated.
“Every day, the technical people repair not le than 10 or 5 buses to join the others because of the rush hours we are having currently,” he stated.
Currently, there are concerns about artificial shortage of vehicles caused by transport operators in order to hike fares during peak hours in the morning and evening.
Mr. Watara noted that following a meeting the Minister for Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Metro Mass has reduced some of its intercity services to free up buses for intracity operations in Accra, as part of efforts to ease the recent transport challenges in the capital.
The Minister appealed to the company to support private transport operators during peak hours to ease the transport challenges.
The intervention is aimed at easing pressure on commuters in Accra, especially during peak morning and evening hours.
“Not long ago, the Transport Minister directed us to make sure that from 4:30m pm to 8pm we have to make our buses available. And the MD and his deputy has also directed the we cut some of the intercity buses and add it to intracity buses because of the rush hours so that we can serve Ghanaians very well,” he added.
According to him, the company is expected to receive over 300 buses by the end of February to add up to the 115 buses in operation.
“We are getting new buses very soon. At least ending of next month (February) we will be getting over 300 buses to add to our fleet of buses.
“Everything has been done already. The final inspection is being done and the buses have bene shipped already,” he stated.
