Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has predicted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will emerge victorious in the party’s flagbearer election scheduled for January 31.

Speaking on Onua FM on January 22, Obiri Boahen also suggested that the outcome could lead to a significant number of members leaving the party.

“Nobody can beat Dr. Bawumia, who is claiming that Kennedy Agyapong will win? Please, please, please. I have correctly predicted our party’s flagbearers since 1992. I said Dr. Bawumia would win. If I have not mentioned your name, you will not win.” he said on Onua FM.

“There is no need for the NPP presidential primary aspirants to sign a peace pact, Peace is not about signing papers; it is about the character of the individuals involved.” he expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s chances.

His comments come as the NPP heads into what is expected to be a bruising primary season, with reports of insults, ethnic undertones, and factional rivalry threatening to deepen wounds left by the party’s 2024 defeat.

Advising his fellow politicians on proper conduct during the election, Obiri Boahen emphasized, “When vying for a position, you do not invoke the ethnicity of your contender. You also do not brand your opponent a liar. That is not how we conduct ourselves.”

The NPP’s January 31 primaries will test party unity as aspirants compete to succeed former President Nana Akufo-Addo, with high stakes for both political loyalty and public perception.
