The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, (UTAG-KNUST), has backed the call for the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor and his deputy to resign.

It is recalled that the University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association (UTAG-UG) called on the due to resign or be fired.

UTAG-KNUST said if they fail to resign by January 31, the Chief of Staff should prompt President John Mahama to dismiss them.

“At an Executive Emergency Meeting held on Monday. January 26th, 2026, the University Teachers Association of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Branch (UTAG-KNUST) resolved to align itself completely with the recent press release dated January 19th, 2026, by the leadership of UTAG-UG regarding the call for the removal of the Director-General (D-G) and his Deputy Director-General (DD-G) of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC),” a press release jointly signed by President of UTAG-KNUST branch, Prof. Eric Abavare  and  Prof. Akwasi Afrifa Acheampong, Secretary of UTAG-KNUST stated.

They explained that, “The Commission has now become a tool for personal vindictiveness and, instead of ensuring that the requisite norms espoused by the Commission are improved, the D-G and his deputy continue to preside over its deterioration without any effort to improve it.”

It added that, “The Commission has failed in its core mandate to ensure that quality education reaches the Ghanaian Student with the requisite lecturers and facilities at the various Public University Campuses, however this is not the situation at hand.

A cursory visit to some of the laboratories and lecture theaters clearly show that they are in dire need of renovation, retooling and expansion.”

UTAG-KNUST noted that “ Critical norms established by the Commission itself, such as the Student-Lecturer Ratio (STR), continue to deteriorate without any plan to improve them.

  • The handling of post-retirement contracts and office-holding extension issues has continued to plague campuses because the Commission has not clearly articulated the differences between the two classes of appointment and. therefore, bundled them together, leading to unnecessary uneasiness on our campuses.
  • Lecturers, who retired in the middle of the academic year. are now unable to leave their Students in the lush because no one has been recruited to replace them. Yet, the Commission has not clearly defined the affected Academic Senior Members current employment status. Therefore, those faculty are in limbo regarding post-retirement contract extensions.
  • Finance Directors at the respective campuses have been left in the dark, without any specific guidance on whether or not to remove these supposed retired Lecturers from their payroll systems this month of January. They do not know what course of action take.”

“Therefore, UTAG-KNUST strongly feels that, for peaceful industrial harmony, the Chief of Staff at the presidency should prevail on H. E. John Dramani Mahama to remove the two gentlemen for incompetence,” it demanded.

UTAG-KNUST urged the Director-General and his Deputy to do the needful by resigning their respective positions by January 31st, before UTAG advises itself.
