One person has died in a shootout with the police along the Dormaa – Gonokrom highway in the Bono region.

This follows an interception by the police in a planned robbery along the route which was thwarted after intelligence was relayed to the peace enforcement agency.

During the operation, the police retrieved five firearms from the suspected robbers.

At a press briefing in Sunyani, the Bono Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joshua Coppson, indicated that the development is a greater step in the fight against armed robbery and organised criminal activities in the region.

According to DCOP Coppson, intelligence gathered on February 11, 2026, indicated that a robbery gang had planned to attack traders travelling along the Dormaa – Gonokrom highway. Surveillance teams were subsequently deployed to the area to thwart the planned attack.

“In the early hours of February 12, 2026, officers advancing towards a parked motorbike in the area came under gunfire from nearby bushes. The police returned fire. A search conducted at daybreak led to the discovery of one male suspect who had sustained gunshot wounds. He was found dead with an AK-47 rifle beside him.”

He noted that they uncovered a sack containing additional weapons and ammunition after searching the area. Among the items retrieved include two Baikal single-barrel guns, a pump-action gun, a Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition and an additional 34 rounds of 9mm ammunition, an AK-47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition and 10 extra rounds, and 39 rounds of BB cartridges.

“Other items recovered were a dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black mask, and a set of talismans,” DCOP Coppson added.

The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

The police assured the public that measures are in place to arrest other members of the gang, asking the public to volunteer credible information that could lead to the arrest of these persons to enhance security in the area.
