The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has rejected claims that he is undermining the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) by establishing the Law Society of Ghana.
The South Dayi Member of Parliament has alleged that the GBA has lost its credibility and relevance.
According to him, instead of focusing on its functions to champion the well being of lawyers in the country, the professional body has resorted to championing the agenda of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the Association is the cause of its downfall.
“GBA has crippled itself; I haven’t. For some time now, GBA has converted itself into a supporter of the NPP agenda. GBA has lost its glory as a professional body,” he said on Channel One TV on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
Dafeamekpor further alleged that certain actions taken by the Association in the 1990s against the late former President, Jerry John Rawlings, and his administration, were meant to advance a cause for the NPP.
He attributed the NDC’s defeat in the 2000 general elections to some of these actions taken by the GBA.
“In the 90’s, all the things the GBA did against the late former President Jerry Rawlings and his government were to advance the course of NPP. Some of those activities led to the NPP winning the 2000 elections,” he alleged.
Dafeamekpor also accused the GBA of being consistently outspoken in what he described as an anti-government posture whenever the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in power.
“The GBA was vociferous anytime the NDC was in government, in an anti-government way. GBA has lost its glory and lustre as a professional body,” he said.
He added that the Law Society of Ghana, which he founded, currently has more than 2,000 members and is issuing licences to new entrants into the legal profession.
