Following the declaration of National Fugu Day by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, some residents in the Bono Region joined the celebration by wearing their Fugu to mark the day.
In several institutions and offices, a number of individuals proudly dressed in the traditional smock, to celebrate the national attire.
The move comes after President John Dramani Mahama’s state visit to Zambia last week when he wore the garment.

Some mockingly called it a “blouse”, prompting a fierce response from Ghanaians online.
A school headmaster who wore his Fugu to school, Eric Bewule described the initiative as a positive step toward promoting Ghana’s local garment industry.

Eunice Boakyewaa, an accountant, noted that promoting local fabrics is necessary for job creation and value addition.
“Gradually, people will accept the idea of wearing Fugu every Wednesday,” she said.

A local smock (Fugu) seller, Adjei Frederick, welcomed the government’s introduction of National Fugu Day, indicating, although sales are gradually improving, many people are yet to purchase the traditional attire.
He expressed hope that with time, more Ghanaians will appreciate the importance of wearing Fugu every Wednesday, as announced.
