Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has said his focus as an appointee in the Mahama administration is to deliver on the mandate given to him, rather than harbour a presidential ambition.
He says the challenges confronting the education sector are his utmost priority, which he hopes to fix by the end of his tenure as Minister.
According to him, he will not sacrifice the role given to him as Education Minister for any ambition as being propagated in the media.
In an exclusive interview with Roland Walker on TV3’s NewDay on Thursday, March 5, 2026, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South was asked what his focus is, considering publications that the NDC’s rebuilding agenda has persons like himself, Julius Debrah, Ato Forson and Asiedu Nketia among those the party wants to succeed President Mahama.
In his response, the former Minority Leader said “my focus is on improving and ensuring that there is inclusive equitable quality education, from basic to tertiary.”
He explained, however, that “my constraint and frustration has been my inability to garner enough adequate resources to support the dream and vision of the President.”
Mr Iddrisu was confident of getting the needed support to realise the vision, hopeful about the economy which is seeing improvement. He noted that government is also on track to end the double-track system in senior high schools, stressing the GETFund’s role in getting it done.
“But I’m sure as the economy improves, allocation will also improve and I think for instance, there is a question of ending double-track. There are about 100 to 200 schools; all they need is furniture to end double-track. The GETFund has capacity to acquire those furniture, make those furniture available”
He lauded St. Peter’s SHS for ending their double-track on their own, disclosing his plans to support them with expanded infrastructure.
“I was in Nkwatia in the Kwahu area, one of the schools there has ended double track and in fact I’m coming to reward them with expended them with expanded infrastructure,” he noted.
