The Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency in the Upper West Region, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has described the life imprisonment handed to convicted serial killer Shariff Abdulai, popularly known as “Cristos,” as a victory for justice and a clear sign that the law is working.
Reacting to the High Court’s decision, the MP said the conviction represents a successful investigation and prosecution, stressing that the ruling would restore confidence and security in the Upper West and Savannah Regions.
“This is a classical example of a successful prosecution and successful investigation,” he said. “The law has spoken very loudly.”

Shariff Abdulai was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Wa High Court after pleading guilty to multiple murders across the Upper West and Savannah regions. His crimes had reportedly created fear in parts of the Upper West Region, with some describing certain forested areas as unsafe due to his activities.
The Vice Chairperson of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Peter Lanchene expressed optimism that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
“You will find it a very different place in the next period for many years to come,” he stated. Adding that criminals must learn from the outcome of the case.
The Vice Chairperson of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament while responding to concerns raised by sections of the public about the speed of the trial and the fact that the convict pleaded guilty, the official dismissed claims of wrongdoing.
“People are asking how it could be a summary trial in a murder case. But if you say you are guilty, the court can proceed accordingly. There’s nothing like wasting time,” he explained.
He further noted that Ghana no longer applies the death penalty in practice, following legal reforms, and therefore a guilty plea in a murder case can result in a life sentence.
“The court was right. There’s nothing wrong with the process,” he emphasised. “He’s in jail, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, and that is it.”
He cautioned that the judgment should be seen as good news for residents of the affected regions and a strong message that the justice system will not shield criminals from punishment.
Meanwhile, some residents have also expressed joy over the sentencing of Sharif Abdulai.

“We’re happy, at least this will serve as deterrent to others,” the resident noted.
