Rising tensions in the Middle East are beginning to affect everyday life in the Gulf, prompting Ghana’s Embassy in Doha to issue a safety advisory to Ghanaian residents and visitors in Qatar as the regional security situation disrupts travel and triggers heightened alerts.
In a notice dated 6 March 2026, the Embassy urged Ghanaians to remain indoors and carefully follow safety directives issued by Qatari authorities as precautionary measures take effect across the country.
“In view of the current security situation and shelter in place, all Ghanaian residents and visitors in the State of Qatar are advised to monitor and strictly follow safety guidelines issued by the competent Qatari authorities,” the Embassy said.
The advisory comes against the backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States, a situation that has heightened security concerns across several Middle Eastern countries. Although Qatar is not directly involved in the conflict, its strategic location in the Gulf means regional instability can quickly affect aviation, security operations and civilian movement.
One of the most immediate consequences has been the temporary closure of Qatar’s airspace, forcing a suspension of flight operations and leaving many travelers stranded in Doha.
With commercial flights grounded, Ghanaians who planned to travel in or out of the country now face uncertainty. Authorities have also activated national alert systems and advised residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Residents have been urged to remain inside safe buildings and avoid exposed areas, especially during periods when security alerts are activated.
“Residents and visitors are advised to stay indoors or find the nearest safe building or designated shelter and avoid going out except in cases of extreme necessity,” the Embassy explained.
While air travel remains suspended, the Embassy says land travel into Saudi Arabia remains open, offering a possible exit route for those seeking to leave Qatar.
Commercial transport services are reportedly operating between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, allowing stranded travelers to cross the border and potentially catch international flights from Saudi airports.
“As you are already aware, Qatar airspace continues to remain closed until further notice and flight operations have been temporarily suspended but land crossing into Saudi Arabia is open and being used,” the statement noted.
However, the Embassy cautioned Ghanaians to carefully review their travel options and ensure they have the appropriate documentation before attempting the journey.
To help ease the situation, Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Doha says it is exploring ways to assist citizens who may need to travel through Saudi Arabia.
“The Embassy of Ghana in Doha is exploring the possibility of facilitating entry visas or visas on arrival for our nationals willing, ready and able to travel to Saudi Arabia in order to secure a flight from there to their various destinations,” the notice said.
Some Ghanaians may already qualify for visa on arrival in Saudi Arabia, particularly those holding valid US, UK or Schengen visas who have previously travelled to those countries.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior has also introduced a temporary relief measure by extending all entry visas that have expired or are about to expire for one-month, effective 28 February 2026. The extension could be prolonged depending on how the regional security situation evolves.
For Ghanaian nationals currently stranded in Doha or those willing to return home until tensions ease, the Embassy has opened a registration process to help coordinate possible travel arrangements.
Interested individuals are required to complete an online form and submit copies of their passport biodata pages to the Embassy. The registration will help officials determine the number of Ghanaians willing to travel by road to Saudi Arabia so that the necessary visa arrangements can be facilitated.
For many Ghanaians living and working in Qatar, the sudden closure of airspace has created anxiety and uncertainty. Travel plans have been disrupted overnight, while security alerts across the region continue to remind residents of how quickly geopolitical tensions can spill into civilian life.
Embassy officials say they are closely monitoring developments and will continue to provide updates to Ghanaians as the situation unfolds.
For now, the message to the Ghanaian community in Qatar is clear: remain indoors, stay alert and follow the guidance of local authorities as the region navigates another moment of geopolitical uncertainty.
