A new era of hope is dawning in Ghana’s fight against cancer, with the proposed Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Care Center of Excellence set to transform cancer treatment, research, and medical training across West Africa.

The center, named after the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will be located at Kwaso in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region and is being established by Breast Care International, led by Dr. Beatrice Wiafe-Addai.

According to the World Health Organization, cancer is a growing health challenge in Africa, with thousands of new cases recorded every year. In Ghana, breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, and liver cancer are among the most common diagnoses.

The center will provide state-of-the-art diagnostic services, specialized surgical care, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and modern treatment technologies for both adult and childhood cancers. It will also address the shortage of cancer specialists across Africa by providing training and research opportunities for doctors, nurses, and scientists.

The project has garnered support from notable personalities, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Bishop Dr. Evans Glover.

The Asantehene’s involvement underscores the importance of cultural leadership in addressing social challenges.

The center is expected to serve as a regional hub for West Africa, attracting partnerships and research collaborations. For families across Ghana and the wider West African region, the vision signals a future where cancer is no longer faced with fear and uncertainty, but with confidence, access to care, and the promise of better outcomes.
