Staff of the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training Service (GTVETS) have resumed work following the suspension of an industrial action by members of the Local Public Services Workers Union (PSWU).
In a statement issued on March 25, Management of GTVETS confirmed that normal operations have been fully restored across all TVET institutions and offices nationwide.
The Service indicated that the strike did not follow laid-down procedures governing industrial action within the public service.
It noted that the action also fell outside ongoing engagement processes between Management and the appropriate union structures.
The development follows a directive by the National Labour Commission (NLC), which ordered the union to call off the strike, citing a breach of Section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which regulates industrial actions in Ghana.
According to GTVETS, prior to the declaration of the strike, management had engaged the union’s mother body, which requested a one-month period to consult its members, with a commitment to reconvene afterwards.
However, the Service said this process was not adhered to.
At a subsequent meeting between Management and the local PSWU leadership, GTVETS noted that some of the concerns raised appeared to be individual in nature and did not sufficiently represent the broader interests of staff.
Despite this, both parties held what Management described as constructive discussions and reached a mutual understanding on the way forward.
The Service indicated that details of the agreement will be communicated to staff and the public in due course.
Management has reaffirmed its commitment to due process, structured engagement, and fairness in addressing staff concerns.
It also assured the public of its continued focus on maintaining stability and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of quality technical and vocational education.
GTVETS further expressed appreciation to learners, parents, and stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the period of the industrial action.
