The Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has paid a glowing tribute to renowned legal practitioner Tsatsu Tsikata, describing his career as a model of excellence, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
Speaking at an event organised by the UPSA Law School to confer a lifetime achievement award on Mr. Tsikata on April 15, the Chief Justice highlighted his decades of distinguished service in private practice, academia, and public life.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie noted that Mr. Tsikata’s career has been defined not only by professional excellence but “an enduring dedication to the development of Ghana’s constitutional order and the strengthening of the rule of law.”
He described the celebrated lawyer as a figure of “formidable skill and rare grit,” whose mastery of legal principles, meticulous preparation, and clarity in presenting complex arguments have earned him enormous respect from both the bench and his colleague lawyers.
According to the Chief Justice, Mr. Tsikata’s legal submissions have consistently reflected a deeper purpose of the law, grounded in principle and guided by justice, rather than mere technical interpretation.
He further observed that Mr. Tsikata belongs to a rare group of legal minds who view the law as a tool for societal progress, rather than a mechanism for personal gain.
“In this sense, I dare say that he belongs to the rare breed of lawyers in our lifetime who see the law as more than just being a set of mechanical rules to be manipulated by lawyers for selfish ends,” he stated.
The Chief Justice emphasised that the lifetime achievement award is not only a recognition of Tsikata’s past accomplishments but also an acknowledgment of his continuing influence on Ghana’s legal landscape and the next generation of lawyers.
“The conferment of this lifetime achievement award is not merely a recognition of past accomplishment; it is also an affirmation of his enduring influence on the current generation of lawyers.
“Mr. Tsikata’s legacy continues to shape contemporary legal discourse and inspire younger members of the profession to approach the law with seriousness of purpose and clarity of thoughts,” he added.
He urged young legal practitioners to draw inspiration from Mr. Tsikata’s career, noting that true professional success lies in contributing to the advancement of justice and the strengthening of institutions.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie added that Mr. Tsikata’s work has left an indelible mark on constitutional discourse, legal scholarship, and democratic governance in Ghana.
“Mr. Tstatu Tsikata, your contributions to the law have left an indelible mark on Ghana’s landscape. Your work has helped shape the contours of constitutional debate, enriched legal scholarship and strengthened the practice of democracy.”
He concluded by congratulating the legal luminary on the honour, expressing hope that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations to uphold the values of integrity, service, and excellence in the legal profession.
