Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called on the African Union to take decisive action against xenophobic attacks on the continent.

Speaking on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey, Dafeamekpor criticised the African Union for what he described as a lack of visible action in addressing recurring incidents.

“If the African Union cannot act on issues like this, then its relevance must be questioned,” he said on April 25.

He called for stronger engagement, including public interventions and coordinated responses among member states.

He emphasised that Africans living in other countries have rights that must be respected and protected.

According to him, failure to act undermines efforts to promote unity and free movement across the continent.

“We must not turn on ourselves,” he said.

Dafeamekpor warned that increasing hostility among African nations could weaken the continent’s collective progress.

He noted that migration is a normal human activity and should not be criminalised or met with violence.

The MP revealed plans to raise the issue at the Pan-African Parliament, calling for a fact-finding mission to investigate xenophobic incidents in South Africa.

He said such a move would help develop concrete recommendations and enforce accountability.

He concluded that beyond statements and condemnations, African leaders must take concrete steps to end xenophobia and strengthen continental unity.
